Something that I will be doing monthly (this is an exception) is writing about the hottest tracks, in my opinion, of the month. Whether that is an unknown House record, an established Hip Hop track or some underground sounds, if I think its pretty special it will more than likely enter #Samis5tracks of the month.
The year has so far been a strong period for urban music. So far Kanye West and Rihanna have released albums, Chris Brown has recently released the remix of Back To Sleep with Zayn and Usher and Skrillex’s label OWSLA released a sick 16 compilation of tracks. A long with that, I’ve been majorly enjoying the sounds from French Montana, Ookay, Sam Feldt and Skepta.
#1 – Katy B x Major Lazer x Craig David – Who Am I
Without a doubt my favourite track from the last 2 months. I wouldn’t have expected this trio to work together but it comes at the perfect time. 2nd track on Katy B’s forthcoming album Honey (releasing 29th April), what comes from this is pretty special. Maybe I was expecting a Major Lazer-esque drop before before I clicked play? But they go for a completely different sound. The soul and passion from the vocalists Katy B and Craig David, with the smooth productions from 1 of my favourite producers Major Lazer, makes this a special record. Video out now.
#2 – Disclosure feat. The Weeknd – Nocturnal (VIP Remix) The original was released a part of Disclosures recent album Caracal, but the VIP remix, released by the duo on the 16th February, hit hard. I played it on the 18th February, on Scratch Radio, first song of the hour and it just has that certain vibe to it. You have to listen to understand, I highly recommend it.
#3 – Wiwek & Skrillex feat. Eliphant – Killa
Wiwek is largley unknown in the UK, I’m just waiting for something to happen before his music explodes everywhere. If you listen to his music, you’ll feel it. Its just really original and fun, this release featuring Skrillex and Eliphant came out 4 days ago part of Wiweks EP, The Free and Rebellious. This track has a hint of both producers, full of jungle-terror sounds and overall it sounds pretty sick. That said, it would equally sound sick live.
#4 – Tinie Tempah feat. Zara Larsson – Girls Like
I was overwhelmed at Tinie Tempahs Junkfood, going back to his grime roots, working with the likes of Yungen, Giggs and Big Narstie to create a pretty sick mixtape. From that to dabbing back into the mainstream world working with young Swedish vocalist Zara Larsson. She’s hit the charts hard in 2015, working with MNEK on Never Forget You and her own release Lush Life this just adds to her portfolio, same age as me and making it big. I have been a huge fan of Tinies for a long time now, its great to see him switching it up with new ideas and styles. This track will definitely hit number 1, I’m confident it will, it sounds current, it sounds fresh.
#5 – CID – No
Just search it. You will be thinking why it didn’t hit my number 1. Fresh House track which heavily samples TLC – No Scrubs, its up-tempo vibes puts a fresh twist on a classic R&B record. Released on 1st February on Musical Freedom, you can expect much more from the New York producer! Great sounds, great vibes.
The first two months of 2016 have already shown what the urban music industry will be bringing, solid sounds and I’m expecting to be stuck for choice next month as well!
